    BuddyPress Moderation & Album – Week #12

Final week, I was a bit nervous because the week before was not really productive as I said a week ago, but this week I did a huge amount of work and things seem to be in place.

I’m doing also lot of documentation these days, features should be ok.

A testable version of bp-album with gsoc features is in the wild, it’s still not stable but the part I’ve added as gsoc proj is almost good, some other parts need fixes/rewriting. Finally near to a stable release.

Instead bp-moderation is pretty much ready for being released, first testers have appreciated it and I just finished writing the documentation on integration with other content types. Still some doc and checking and I’ll release it.

    Good luck everyone!

    BuddyPress Album – Week #11

This week has not been productive as the last one, mainly because the gasoline quest (due to a truck drivers strike it was almost impossible to find some gas here in Crete), two power outages and some network problems.

I still managed to do something: finished the set of oEmbed media modules and started the local audio one.

I found useful getid3 for gathering audio info and as it also detect content types of a good range of media files I’m integrating it with the content type detection class for when no other detection method are available (preferred ones are php fileinfo extension and the shell ‘file’ utility).

I plan to prepare a testable bp-album version tomorrow or at most Saturday, (un)luckily I’ll be back in Italy by 36 hours so this weekend I can focus on finishing my gsoc projs.

    BuddyPress Album – Week #10

This week has been pretty productive, although I’m currently in Greece with my friends :D.

I’ve rewritten lot of the code of the multimedia part of bp-album to make it tidier and cleaner and I merged it with the not-gsoc-related features from other repo.

As now the development repo of bp-album is on google code (see this post), I’m working there for the merge and other changes, but I always copy it to gsoc svn when there’s some important change related to gsoc.

Next week I’ll work on both bp-album and bp-moderation, adding missing features, fixing known bugs and writing documentation.

    BuddyPress Album – Week #9

This week I did more research then coding for the gsoc proj, bp-album will support audio and video by default so I’m looking for appropriate audio and video players.

For audio you probably already know WP Audio Player and I think is good to be the default audio player: simple, good looking, MIT license, already known by a lot of wordpress users.

For video I have two candidates for now: Flowplayer and VideoPress player:

    • Flowplayer is easy customizable and feature rich, there is a GPL free version but it has Flowplayer branding.
    • Videopress is the video solution used by wordpress.com and its released under GPL, it’s not only a player but a complete solution for self-hosting video (client player + server soft), so in the future it would be really interesting working on a complete integration with it, but I still haven’t had time for a deep look in it. Also VideoPress has recently been rewritten but the source is 10 months old.

Of course self-hosting video is something that only big communities can afford, but bp-album also support oEmbed urls so most communities will probably use self hosted pics + oEmbed (this could easily be the default configuration). I don’t know if I’ll be able to put in video processing in first version of the video module, if not self hosted video will need to be already encoded.

Sorry for being so late this week, had some unexpected busy days.

If you have some suggestions please leave a comment 🙂

Did you consider using only HTML5 video players, and add oEmbed support for flash videos?

      • Francesco Laffi 2:35 pm on July 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’ve considered HTML5 video players, but not only them because it’s not widely supported (I wouldn’t care if it was for my website, but it’s intended to be used by a lot of communities).
Instead I’d really like to have degradable HTML5 players, but of course I’d need a flash player also in this case and it needs encoding to webm/ogg/mp4.
Video processing looks pretty complex (I’m looking in different solutions for this), but at least oEmbed is already working good.

Unless something has changed recently, one huge weakness of the videopress player is that it does not support rtmp/rtmpe streaming. Hence no ability for live streaming. I personally was quite excited when I first heard about videopress, but after finding no live streaming support and 10 month old source code, it was a no-go from the start.

I wouldn’t even consider myself a big community. Most of my clients only have 50-100 members. I simply run a cluster of flashcomm/wowza servers and provide an inexpensive service to them.

Thanks for your suggestions, I agree that the current avaliable source has big cons, I’ll consider it if and when the source get updated 🙂

    BuddyPress Album – Week #8

Sorry for the late update this week.

Midterm is passed and I managed to get multimedia in bp-album working in time, the ‘media module’ system is in place and right now I wrote modules for pics and oEmbed videos, but I’m going to write other modules.

I’m probably not going to code last days of this week because I’m studying for an exam that I’m going to take on monday, the last one for this summer, probably I’ll not pass it anyway but it deserve a try 🙂

After it I’m going to fix bp-moderation bugs and work on bp-album ( merge the progresses on gsoc repo with progress from other repos ).

I have a bunch of ideas for bp-moderation and I’ll not be able to do all them in gsoc period, so in a few days I’ll probably ask here and/or on bp.org forums some feedback on the ones I should prioritize.

    BuddyPress Album – Week #7

This week I was going to miss my posting day, I hadn’t realized it is already Thursday until I got the notification of scribu’s new post and I thought I usually write on the same day of him 🙂

Last week I worked a lot and I think I managed to do the ‘hard’ work of the bp-album part: code refactoring, db changes, new handlers for media upload and adding by url (both oEmbed and remote media), validation with media type checking, media modules system ( each module is a class that must implement the media module interface and can implement other interfaces depending on its features and its level of integration with bp-album).

But all the ‘new’ code is still unconnected to the actual plugin frontend, so I still have nothing to show on this, but I should (actually I have to because there are only few days until midterm) have it working in next days 🙂

    BuddyPress Album – Week #6

After announcing that bp-moderation is ready to test in its dedicated group on buddypress.org, first days of this week have gone getting feedback for it and fixing some of the reported bugs.

Then I travelled to the south of Italy and I’ll work from here for sometime…although 3G connection isn’t the best and I’m missing the extended screen, I find my temporary workspace pretty nice.

About actual progresses on bp-album, I had been studying the current plugin structure and best way to implement multimedia support, did a lot of sketches (I found the notebook that was in the GSOC welcome package really useful for this) and I’ll start writing/committing real code tomorrow.

    BuddyPress Moderation – Week #5

At last BuddyPress Moderation is done! I mean the part I had to do before mid-term, of course it can still be enhanced and documented after mid-term.

Now I’ll have to work hard because I’m late with the bp-album part, but at least one big part of the project is done.

In details this week I finished the backend member view (sql query there was hard), bug fixing, minor enhancement and content types for each default component of buddypress ( status update, activity comment, blog post, blog comment, member, group, forum post, forum topic ).

In case someone was waiting for this, remember this is still a testing version and if you wait tomorrow I’ll post the reference version for testing and feedback in wp plugin repo.

P.S.: other students, check out this video lecture Elements of Programming Style, you’ll probably find it interesting, link originally suggested by hakre

    BuddyPress Moderation – Week #4

This has been a slow coding week, mainly because of an exam I’ve taken on Tuesday. Luckily that was the last exam of June and now I have two weeks for focusing on coding, so I think I should be able to catch up with the schedule.

I almost finished the page with the contents table and the action on them, after it I’ll move on the page with the members table.

    BuddyPress Moderation – Week #3

This week I worked most on the backend part, not fast as I hoped (in last week post I said I aimed to finish it by today), but is going well.

I firstly wrote the setting page, then I worked on the page on which admins can see the reported content.

In the screenshot you see the options that admins have for querying reported contents

The database query can already use all those options, but the results are currently not displayed, so I think it’s all for now.

    bye

    Francesco

Thanks for the update. Just remember the KISS approach when it comes to providing options: “Keep It Simple Stupid”. 🙂

You might also want to consider providing pre-defined reports. “Today’s activity awaiting moderation”, “Activity older than five days awaiting moderation”, “Most reported content” – just some examples of the top of my head.

        Thanks for suggestions 🙂
I thought to add a way for saving favorite reports and call them, providing some pre-defined ones is a very good idea. I think this is an enhancement I could make after mid-term, right?
